In Praise of the Tropical Literary Festival

The writer is something of a contortionist these days. There is a shrinking number of outlets for good writing.  Books don’t sell on their own merits and are hostage to marketing ploys and dubiously judged literary awards.  The printed media is beyond life support.  My bookshelves are a graveyard full of former publications and out-of-print sensations.  This leaves the online-sphere, where you are rewarded as a writer with little more than an emoticon.

Searching for the Missing Girl

Åke Edwardson
Nov 1st, 2013

I went to Asia the first time in 1973. I was 20 years old. I had wanted to go since I saw that photograph of my father getting a shave from a very dark man on deck in Bombay harbour. You could see the mighty city beyond the Taj Mahal Hotel.  Dad was the cook on the merchant ship; the year was 1950. Three more to go before I entered this crazy world.

I travelled the Overland Tour, from Istanbul through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India. It took me four months to reach Bombay. I checked out the pier: yeah, it was here, dad. Now I'm finally here.

Notes from a Strange Island: Artificial

Justin Hill
Oct 31st, 2013

I live in an artificial community.  There is an artificial beach, an artificial promenade, and an infinite horizon swimming pool, with granite seals spurting water from their mouths, and a view into the infinite blue-grey Hong Kong haze, with just the hint of brown pollution.
